Metal gutters

Most often they are made of ordinary or galvanized steel .

The advantages of galvanized gutters include:

  • durability;

  • frost resistance;

  • impact resistance;

  • do not deteriorate under the influence of sunlight.

But there are a number of significant disadvantages:

  • difficult fastening of the drain to the wall of the house due to the large weight of the structure;

  • the appearance of corrosion and rust on metal pipes without special polymer impregnation.

DIY plastic drain

The most economical, but not too technologically advanced type of drain. Plastic bottles are connected to each other using sealant and plastic connectors. The construction will be quite cheap, but temporary.

Depending on the quality of the bottles, such a drain will serve you from one to several years. Whatever type of drains you choose, if they are not serviced, cleaned and repaired in time, even a steel drain will not work for even a couple of seasons.

After winter, damage to the drain can be caused by the formation of frost, or debris that has accumulated since autumn.

Even a small amount of fall foliage can damage the integrity of the drain, break it or lead to a leak.

The blockage can also serve as a source of active growth of moss and plants through the drainpipe, which will be quite difficult to remove when cleaning.

In summer, wasp nests can form in such blockages, and then pest control will be added to simple cleaning.

To prevent blockages, you should regularly clean the drain, treat the drains from ice and install a heating cable .

Cleaning drains with improvised means

  1. First of all, choose a suitable ladder.

  2. Since most drains are installed under the roof of the house, the stairs must be sufficiently stable. If your house is two or more stories high, it is better to install scaffolding or use climbing equipment or aerial platforms.

  3. Thoroughly clean all overhead pipes and funnels, remove debris in a pre-prepared box or bag so as not to clog the local area.

  4. Clean the pipes from both sides of the accumulated sediment using special home-made scrapers and long sticks.

  5. A clogged drainpipe can be cleared with a plumbing cable.

  6. Rinse the gutter with water - from a bucket or hose, after placing an empty bucket or barrel under the drain hole so that all the garbage is collected in one place.
